Bacaro Food and Wine Tour – A Taste of Venice in 2.5 Hours

Immerse yourself in the flavors, traditions, and stories of Venice on this 2.5-hour walking food and wine tour through the heart of the city. This experience is more than just a tasting—it’s a cultural journey, blending the rich culinary heritage of Venice with its fascinating history and vibrant street life.

Wander through lively streets and quiet alleyways, from iconic landmarks like the Rialto Bridge to tucked-away gems that only locals know. Along the way, we’ll stop at Venice’s oldest and most beloved “bacari”—small, traditional wine bars where Venetians have gathered for centuries to share a drink, a snack, and a story.

Our first stop is the Rialto market, the beating heart of Venetian daily life. This bustling marketplace is a feast for the senses—colorful displays of fresh fruits, vegetables, herbs, and an impressive variety of seafood caught right from the lagoon. It’s here that you’ll get a sense of how deeply food is tied to the rhythms of the city and the lives of its people.

From there, the tour takes you through charming backstreets and quiet canals to visit at least three authentic bacari or osterie, each with its own atmosphere and specialties. In these cozy, often centuries-old spots, you’ll sample cicchetti—Venetian small plates similar to Spanish tapas, each one packed with flavor and rooted in local tradition. Think creamy baccalà mantecato (whipped cod), marinated sardines, polenta with cheese or anchovies, and seasonal surprises.

No bacaro tour would be complete without the perfect wine pairings. You’ll enjoy a selection of regional wines, including crisp whites from the Veneto hills, bold reds, and of course, the iconic Prosecco—the pride of the region. I’ll introduce you to the stories behind each glass and share tips for ordering like a local.

But this tour isn’t just about eating and drinking—it’s about discovering Venice through its flavors. As we walk, I’ll share the history behind the city’s culinary traditions, how trade with the East shaped Venetian cuisine, and why the bacaro culture remains such an important part of life here today. You’ll also learn how to spot a real bacaro, how locals enjoy their cicchetti, and the unwritten rules of the Venetian aperitivo.

To end on a sweet note, we’ll stop for a typical dessert tasting, chosen based on the season and the neighborhood. It might be a fritoa during Carnival season, a creamy tiramisù, or a classic Venetian cookie from a historic pasticceria. It’s the perfect way to finish off your taste journey.

Whether you’re a foodie, a wine lover, or simply curious about Venetian culture, this tour is designed to be fun, relaxed, and unforgettable. It’s ideal for first-time visitors looking to go beyond the tourist traps, as well as returning guests who want to experience the city from a local’s point of view.

So come hungry, come curious, and let’s raise a glass together in true Venetian style.

Highly recommend! Really cool walk, filled with history, and led us to see some parts of Venice that we’d likely not stumble upon alone. We visited some workshops, a pasticceria, and it is also super helpful how Lucia provides us with a ton of recommendations for where to eat. Last but not least, loved her energy and good vibes!
